Abstract

In 1999 the development of the OCIT-Standard (Open Communication Interface for Road Traffic Control Systems) has been started in Germany. In 2001 the first level of the new standard "OCIT-1"has been defined so that first controllers using this technique could be installed and come into service this year. Based on the new technology this was not only a simple exchange of traffic controllers and computers, but it lead to a totally new architecture in traffic control systems as they have been commonly in use. Because of the open TCP/IP-based architecture it's easier to add new applications and install intersection controllers from different manufacturers with comparable abilities.
