Abstract

In 1989 an Austroads Polymer Modified Binder (PMB) Project Group was established to investigate and provide recommendations regarding the use of PMBs in Australia. The first task comprised gathering and collating existing information and experience. The next phase comprised two major activities: (a) to establish field trials to evaluate available PMBs and (b) to develop a range of suitable test methods and values to allow the perceived important properties and characteristics to be measured and specified. In May 1997 an Austroads specification framework for polymer modified binders was issued as APRG Report 19. This document contained a specification framework in terms of a new set of test methods together with selection criteria for sealing and asphalt applications. To support APRG Report 19, a set of test methods (MBT 01 to 32) were issued together with a PMB Users Guide to provide practitioners with the latest information available from ongoing experience. This was the initial approach to establishing a national PMB specification. This paper summarises the development of the specification framework and supporting documents. Finalisation of the field trial work will culminate in a national performance related PMB specification. (A)
