Abstract

A 50th percentile adult male, pedestrian dummy, called Polar I, has been developed. During this development effort, the focus was on achieving fidelity with currently available anthropometrical and human kinematic data. This paper discusses the biomechanical requirements that were established for the dummy and computer modeling that was performed to determine the design parameters for the principal components. Accordingly, the paper discusses the design, fabrication and testing of the components. A preliminary series of crash tests was conducted to evaluate the responses of the dummy. The results from these crash tests with the dummy are discussed. Based on these results, modifications to the initial dummy design were made and the refined dummy was performed in a second series of tests. The results from the second series of tests are also discussed. (A)
