Abstract

This paper investigates a new in car information system, which is designed on the assumption that a combination of subsystems will be more practical than an "all in one" system. It is composed of several data processing/communication subsystems. Each of these can operate by itself, but can provide a better service if combined with the other subsystems. The function of each subsystem is as follows: a) a cathode ray tube and a data processing unit; b) a vehicle monitor; c) a navigation subsystem, which monitors the car location in the road network; d) an individual communication system between the car and the communication centre; e) a real time information subsystem, which receives information on road and traffic congestion from the road administrators. The configuration of the proposed navigation system is given in more detail.
