Abstract

Under California Standard Agreement 13459, the Institute of Transportation and Traffic Engineering of UCLA developed and tested a full scale working prototype device to present drivers with a sequence of highway signs while they perform a tracking (steering) task. One hundred and fifty -nine drivers were tested on three configurations of freeway-to-freeway interchange signing. The reactions of these drivers are considered to indicate that the sign tester device may be applicable to research of this particular nature- On the basis of this experience with the prototype, a final design was completed for the sign tester.
