Abstract

This paper describes the Highway Inventory Project which focuses on the specific needs of provincial transportation agencies with respect to highway infrastructure management. It includes the enhancement of the CARIS GIS software package to handle dynamic segmentation and linear referenceing, and the development of a generic highway inventory GIS application which is capable of interfacing with existing New Brunswick Department of Transportation (NBDOT) attribute databases. The project includes a data collection/conversion phase. This is directed towards the preparation, distribution and maintenance of a georeferenced, topologically structured digital road centerline network for a designated pilot project area within New Brunswick. This digital network is to be used as a GIS database for subsequent applications development. This paper describes the overall approach to the project, with particular emphasis on the GIS-T functionality required to support the highway inventory application. A discussion of the project status as of June 1993 will also be included.
