Development of high speed optical LAN for in-vehicle system.

Abstract

In-vehicle information systems, which include car navigation systems, emergency, and information services, are progressing to the stage of diversified features and higher performance wherein the rapid evolution of in-vehicle consumer devices, particularly DVD and DVD-ROM, has created new requirements for a high-speed in-vehicle LAN to accommodate the installation of a wide range of in-vehicle electronics. This paper describes the High Speed Optical LAN (HSO LAN) for in-vehicle systems which provides high speed transmission and offers excellent EMI characteristics. The HSO LAN uses a newly developed protocol, plastic optical fiber (POF), and a burst mode operation optical transceiver. The HSO LAN transfers asynchronous data (equipment control data), bulk data (CD ROM data as digital map data), and isochronous data (audio and video data). The transfer rate of the HSO LAN is 54Mbps. Thus, it provides the backbone for the multimedia systems in the car.
