Abstract

This paper describes the development of an integrated public transport passenger information system within the QUARTET project and the joint work undertaken by the cities of Athens, Birmingham, Stuttgart and Torino. A description of the PT-PIS (Passenger Transport - Passenger Information System) and its system architecture are provided. The end-product of this work is the system which has been developed by Centro (the Passenger Transport Executive for the West Midlands region of the U.K.). This operates against a background of public transport deregulation in which the authority has no overall control over the services operated by bus companies. The problems posed by deregulation and the influence which this has had on the design of the systems is outlined together with a description of the system and its architecture and overall functionality.
