Abstract

Bangkok and 17 neighboring provinces within a 100 kilometer radius have experienced various traffic problems such as congestion, pollution, and accidents. Due to rapidly increased travel demand in the past decades, concerned transport agencies began to deploy ITS as a supplementary tool in providing services. However, most systems being implemented so far are stand-alone with little or no coordination. Those deployments have resulted in inefficient use of resources and inadequate services. The first ITS Master Plan for greater Bangkok region, or to be precise, for Thailand has been developed with an aim of providing a unified intelligent operation and management of transport services as well as traveler information to general public. The vision of the plan is to have ITS system that conforms to international standard and supports Ministry of Transport strategies in providing efficient operation and management of transportation and traffic system for the country. The Plan also sets an investment framework for the next ten years to reduce duplication and integrate and provide interoperable systems among relevant agencies.
