Abstract

In traffic systems, the capacity of traffic and transportation is a very important factor that determines the efficiency of the system. The capacity of traffic and transportation is mainly limited by the speed of the traffic system, branching and merging systems, and the inter-vehicle distance. This paper focuses on branching and merging that are one of the most important factors in traffic, describes the history of the development of branching and merging systems for roads and railroads that are the main land traffic systems and the concepts of such systems, and briefly discusses new failsafe branching and merging systems based on the ITS technology and advanced information systems. The paper also reports on and evaluates the system developed by the Institute of Construction.
