Abstract

As a result of recent developments in personal computer technology, personal computers are finding a wider scope of applications in road traffic control system. However, they have not yet been used in traffic signal control that naturally requires real-time control. By reconsidering a network configuration involving the host computer and terminals to alleviate restrictions arising from stricter requirement for real-time control, a personal computer-based, highly cost-efficient road traffic control system first time in Japan -- "UC model" (UTMS Compact traffic control system model, hereby, UTMS is an abbreviation for Universal Traffic Management Systems and means "a new traffic management system" advocated by the National Police Agency to implement the ITS) in a small city (mini-center) has been successfully built. At the same time, MODERATO (Management by Origin-Destination Related Adaptation for Traffic Optimization) as a new traffic control technique has been fully incorporated. (A*)
