Abstract

Among research on Advanced Cruise-Assist Highway Systems (AHS), which is one of the functions to be equipped on the Smartway 2001 "Intelligent Road Project", development of a road system (road sensors) for detecting road conditions which aims to detect cruising vehicles, obstacles and other objects on roads is essential. This paper presents an overview of activities and the results of research performed during fiscal 1999. The Advanced Cruise-Assist Highway System Research Association (AHSRA) has organized AHS user services into principal user service units, and has further organized the specifications required by these services into AHS requirements. The Road System Development Team for Road Condition Detection (Road Sensor RT) is developing a road sensor system that will realize these AHS requirements through the development of obstacle and cruising vehicle detection algorithms. Plans are already in place to verify the technology developed here in proving tests scheduled for the year 2000. For the covering abstract see ITRD E114174.
