Abstract

This paper describes a parking assistance system that uses virtual viewpoint image synthesis technology. The idea is that one of the most appropriate methods for assisting a driver attempting to park is to provide the driver with an aerial view of the vehicle and surrounding area. Accordingly, a method is proposed of synthesizing a virtual image viewed from an arbitrary overhead viewpoint by converting and integrating multiple images taken from cameras mounted on the vehicle. To achieve real-time image synthesis, the authors introduced a road surface model assuming that all objects in the images exist on the ground around the vehicle. This model enables the high speed synthesis of a virtual viewpoint image. For the covering abstract see ITRD E114174.
