Abstract

In 1999, the Advanced Cruise-Assist Highway System Research Association (AHSRA) developed a new sensor to detect the location of pedestrians who are crossing streets. The purpose of this sensor is to prove out the AHS system for preventing collisions with pedestrians crossing streets. The pedestrian detection sensor combines the advantages of laser sensing and image sensing in a complementary manner for the differential detection of human beings and vehicles. The laser sensor utilizes a laser at an eye safe wavelength to detect the location of moving objects in and around pedestrian crosswalks with a precision of +/-50 cm or less. The image sensor is used to further classify the detected moving object as a human being or a vehicle. For the covering abstract see ITRD E114174.
