This paper presents a Personal Traffic Information On Demand Service (PTIODS) system, which provides users with real-time traffic information and path plan through a wireless communication unit. When a user enters his/her starting point and destination on equipment with two-way communication, the traffic information center determines the shortest path and the estimated time of arrival at the destination. A map is sent with this information to the user for displaying on a simple display unit through a two-way communication unit. In this paper, the authors develop a map database structure for traffic information and a front network database which is designed to avoid computation time explosion usually involved with centralized multi-user processing.
