Development problems with inflatable restraints in small passenger vehicles.

Abstract

This paper summarizes the work done on air bag systems under Volkswagen' s restraint system development program. Theoretical considerations, both general and applied to small cars, and typical design parameters are discussed. It is indicated that the air bag is not clearly superior to other restraints.
