Abstract

The authors have developed a transmission control system called NAVIAI-SHIFT that controls 5-speed automatic transmissions by using road information from a navigation system. It has been in use in Toyota's new Mark II. This control system calculates the length and geometry of the street from the vehicle's current position to the next corner based on road information from the onboard navigation system. It then determines the optimum gear selection based on the above-mentioned information and road grade information, and associates the determination with the present running speed and driver's operating behavior so that the optimum gearshift control can be achieved. This paper describes the configuration, features and effect of the new automatic transmission control system that employs navigation information.
