Abstract

Development of GATS (Global Automotive Telematics Standard) terminals has been carried out by Panasonic in Japan. GATS, which has been started in Europe based on GSM (Global System for Mobile communications), is not only for Europe, because GATS is the "global" standard for Telematics terminals and services and it is providing an excellent framework for ITS/Telematics solutions with mobile communications. WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) is becoming to be established as the standard for mobile internet and it enables the enhancement of GATS with its advantages. In addition, "i-mode" (a mobile internet service launched in Japan) and its integration with car navigation systems can provide a good reference model for mobile internet based Telematics services. Integration of GATS and WAP is a key for deployment and extension of transport Telematics for smart and safe societies.
