Abstract

This paper presents an approach to develop explicit temperature coefficients for the AASHTO flexible pavement design equation based on the mean annual pavement temperature. The introduced coefficients are used to modify the layer coefficient of the asphalt bound layer, following a pattern similar to that made by AASHTO in the development of drainage coefficients. The approach used accounts for the fact that the AASHTO layer coefficient of a specific layer is not only dependent on its resilient modulus but also on its thickness, other layer thicknesses and resilient moduli, and the resilient modulus of subgrade soil. This is achieved through in-situ characterization of pavement layers. (A)
