Abstract

This paper describes a real-time traffic queue length measuring algorithm using image processing. As a queue length measuring algorithm, a vehicle tracking algorithm is combined with an edge detection technique and a field test was carried out on an approach at a signalized intersection. The test result shows that a standing queue can be measured within the error rate of 5 percent, but further refinement of the algorithm is necessary for the measurement of a moving queue.
