Abstract

A Travel Time Estimation System was develoed to estimate the travel time using the data of Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI) and ultrasonic vehicle detectors (UVDs) and to provide drivers with real-time travel time. The AVI system is effective for travel time estimation because it can measure travel time of a highway section directly. However, if the section is long, the delay in measuring it by AVI may lead to incongruities with the actual travel time. In order to overcome this problem, three travel time estimation methods were developed and evaluated. All three methods gave reliable estimations, and the travel time forecast method provided the best results. The Travel Time Estimation System was installed on an arterial road network in February 1999 and is presently in use. (A*)
