Abstract

A vehicle dimension measuring system employing laser technology was developed which makes the real-time, high-precision measurement of the dimensions of vehicles (i.e., the width, height, and length of each vehicle) running on the road. This system consists of four laser sensors that detect the dimensions of vehicles and a control unit that determines the dimensions according to the information from the laser sensors. The system makes it possible to measure the overall lengths of vehicles without being influenced by the acceleration or deceleration of the vehicles. Favorable results were obtained from an actual field test of the system, which verified that the system has high practical performance. For the covering abstract see ITRD E114174.
