Abstract

The Nara National Highway Work Office is developing a system for predicting road icing in support of measures for dealing with icing and excessive snow, the purpose being that of realizing high-level, efficient winter road management of the Meihan National Highway. So far it has built a prototype system and carried out demonstration testing thereof over a period of two years. As a result it has been found to be effective in such respects as raising the level of winter road management on the Meihan National Highway through higher efficiency of sprinkling of anti-icing materials and support of judgment whether or not measures should be implemented to counter icing and excessive snow in particular situations.
