Abstract

This paper examines the part played by the engineering function in one particular commercial change in local bus operations. Conventional shopping bus services in the UK have suffered from declining patronage over the last 30 years. National bus company decided to ascertain the effects of providing a much smaller number of seats at a very high frequency. Details are given of the operating experience as regards vehicle capacity, dimensions and manoeuvrability floor height, step height, door width, etc.
