This brief article examines the key transport strategies of the Spanish Department of Transport, which was reorganized in 1991 as part of a government drive to improve global competitiveness and to modernize the country. The authors point out the need for an adequate investment policy, an integrated modal transport policy which offers the user a choice, and transport policies in line with Community Transport policy. The article goes on to indicate briefly specific government policies in road, railway, air and maritime transport.
