Abstract

The question of the effects of urban growth on road safety has been little dealt with in literature. It can be studied through urban forms that urban growth generates. The link between urbanism and road safety is complex. It involves taking the dynamic character of urban spaces into account. It requires the analysis of properties of urban forms which have influence on road safety. These properties are obtained and studied based on monographic analyses of typical residential urban forms. They are linked to morphology and structure of urban forms and also to their layout. The use of theses properties enables to explicit road safety problems caused by urban forms and to raise the question of their possible improvement. None appears safer than the others. But some urban forms involve road safety problems which can be easier improved. (Author/publisher)
