Dewees Island : a case study in sustainable development.

Abstract

Sustainable development is the cliche of modern engineering that is in vogue, but it is often difficult to define, which in turn makes it hard to put into practice. This paper explores the concept of sustainable development as an integrated, systems engineering problem that requires incorporating environmental responsiveness, resource efficiency, and community and cultural sensitivity together. As such, it is a natural and integral part of good engineering practice that should be included in all engineered projects. The paper examines how these principles were applied in a specific case at Dewees Island in the US. (A)
