Abstract

The responsibilities of local authorities in the field of road, traffic and safety, and the different aspects of local road safety work:Identification and analysis of acute problems, road design and traffic engineering measures, monitoring traffic and safety, education and campaigns, are described. The relationship between central state activities and local road safety work is investigated.The evaluation of road safety measures is generally considered as a task for central research institutes, but the paper advocates for a cooperation of the local safety workers to the evaluation process.
