Abstract

The overall purpose of this project was to develop a diagnostic assessment instrument for problem drivers that could be used in a driver improvement context. The present report is part one of a two part project. It contains a review of literature on factors associated with risky driving, defined in terms of accidents, violations and risky driving behaviour. The objectives of this review are to (1) identify the factors most strongly and consistently associated with risky and problem driving; (2) indicate which factors may represent overlapping or related constructs; (3) determine the relative importance of each factor in predicting risky and problem driving; and (4) identify the scales or instruments used to assess these factors.
