Abstract

Dial-a-Bus is a new form of public transport without any adherence to fixed timetables, routes or bus stops. Passengers are transported from door to door. The core activity in Dial-a-Bus operations is the dispatching of travel requests in a dispatch centre. Nowadays modern information and communication technologies are available, to organize the operation of Dial-a-Bus in an optimal way. Volkswagen has initiated several practical tests under real-life conditions. The results and experiences are: The Dial-a-Bus concept works and can be economically viable. The computer aided dispatching system improves the operation efficiently. The Dial-a-Bus concept is very well looked upon by the public with more and more interest for further applications. Dial-a-Bus seems to be an intelligent system to meet requirements of public transport.
