Australia's contemporary transport land use system is a palimpsest. It reflects the periodic superimposition of a series of technological and organisational changes on the aboriginal transport land use system over the past 200 years. Major restructurings have occurred in response to economic crises in the 1840's, 1890's en 1930's and the early 1970's. A brief review is given of the pivotal technological and organisational changes following the 1840, 1890 and 1930 crises. Most attention, however, is given to the period since the early 1970s as the subsequent interplay of externa pressures and internal forces holds the key as to how urban and regional transport land use systems are likely to respond to anticipated global technological and organisational developments.
