Abstract

This safety sheet presents information regarding collisions with animals, especially deer. In 1995, 111 people were killed in the United States in collisions with animals. The safety sheet presents advice on how to avoid hitting an animal. The advice includes paying attention to animal crossing signs and speed limit signs. Also, as most of the deer related collisions occur at dusk or dawn, and during their mating season in November and December, it would be prudent to be particularly watchful at these times. The vehicle type most frequently involved in collisions with animals are automobiles (61% of animal collisions), followed by pickup trucks (26%), vans (7%), and lastly, tractor trailers (2%).
