The definition of an alcoholic is relatively sharply defined in medical-sociological criteria. The typical results of this illness are somatic damage mainly to the central and peripheral nervous system. Because of this damage, there is an increase in the accident risk, both during the drinking period and also in the first months of a period of abstinence.
