Abstract

The number of accidents involving drunken drivers is significantly higher than is apparent from Austrian accident statistics since not all accidents are reported and the degree of drunkenness is only estimated very approximately by means of clinical tests. It is pointed out that the 0.8 ‰ limit currently valid in Austria cannot be used as a general measure to decide between fitness and lack of fitness to drive.
