The factor darkness increases the risk for pedestrians to get an accident with 30%; a wet road with 100%. The risk for a pedestrian to be runned over in the night when raining is 10 times bigger as in daylight. Research shows that a good quality of public lighting decreases the number of accidents in the night with 30%, and with pedestrians with 50%. When the public lighting cannot be along the whole road, then pedestrian crossings must be lighted. Psychological aspects in road user behaviour on pedestrian crossings are also discussed.
