Abstract

Nowadays, ultrasonic sensors are more and more widely used for car applications demonstrating that this technology can fulfil some of the present needs. However, new requirements are foreseen for the future applications in the ITS domain. In this paper, a new electronic scanning system based on a phased array of ultrasonic transducers is presented. Its main objective is to propose an innovative step for enabling the obstacle angle positioning in the short range up to 5 m. The specific system architecture, the dedicated signal processing and the system prototype tests results presented in this paper can open new future applications possibilities study such as the full automatic parking or the guidance in traffic jams. In combination with longer range detection radar device, for example, this system can bring a complement of safety and driver assistance. For the covering abstract see ITRD E114174.
