Abstract

Each year the standards in digital mapping are set even higher. As accuracy and coverage increase, so do the number of tasks in which the content of geographical data plays a vital role, in new ITS applications as well as in future mobility. In this presentation an overview is given on the way digital maps are related to various ITS applications and in which way the vital characteristics of a digital map form the critical success factors in the performance of many ITS applications such as the quality of the map data (completeness, correctness, up-to-dateness, accuracy), the content of the geographical database (especially concerning traffic attributes, points of interest, location reference related to RDS-TMC (Radio Data System-Traffic Management Centre), GSM (Global System for Mobile communication), DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting), etc.), and the coverage of the seamless map data.
