Abstract

This presentation is based on planning work now in progress. In March 1999, the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Finland launched a planning project for the digital multipurpose database of the road and street network. The first phase, i.e. the planning phase of the project, will be completed in January 2001. The second phase of the project called "Implementation of the national road and street information system" will start in 2001. The presentation concerns the first phase of the project, i.e. "Planning of the national road and street information system - DIGIROAD", which is a part of the Research and Development Programme 1998 - 2000 for Transport Telematics in Finland. The presentation is based on the experiences gathered from the work carried out so far and it summarises the main points of the planning work and some of the results and conclusions reached by July 2000. The digital road and street databases are improving: route guidance and navigation, transport planning support, infrastructure maintenance management, emergency vehicle management and technical assessment when used together with a vehicle motion simulator based on kinematics make many other new services possible.
