Abstract

Scaling laws are derived for the lifting force acting on magnetically levitated trains. Two kinds of system are compared; in the one forces are provided by permanent magnets or magnetized ferromagnetic cores, in the other by coreless current-carrying conductors. For the first kind of system the lifting force per unit weight decreases with increasing dimensions, while for the second kind it increases.
