Abstract

The Demonstration of Interoperable Road-user End-to-end Charging and Telematics System (DIRECTS) project is the key to the future of road user charging in Great Britain. This paper gives the background details to the project but focuses on the health, safety and environmental aspects of delivering the project. The project planning has required a partnership of several different institutions. The project team has included professionals from the disciplines of systems and civil engineering. The paper outlines the practical issues surrounding the implementation of an Intelligent Transport Systems project and stresses the importance of cooperation and communication between institutions and disciplines.
