Abstract

This paper reports on a national discount superstore trip generation study. The purpose of the study was to establish a representative national sample from which supercenter trip generation rates and equations could be developed for use in traffic access and impact studies. A sample size of 32 study sites provided a large enough sample so that results would benefitfrom the central limit theorem but would not be overly costly. Nearly all sites required manual or video counting due to the presence of out-parcel development and the design of driveways. Findings show that typical season vehicle trip generation rates were somewhat higher (except Sunday) than those reported in the 7th edition of Trip Generation, but these differences were not statistically significant. Weekday pass-by trips were slightly lower than stated in the 2nd Edition of Trip Generation Handbook, but this difference also was not statistically significant. Same-store typicaland peak season trip generation rates were also compared. It was found that weekday trip generation rates are similar in both seasons, but weekendtrip generation rates are higher during peak season.
