The article states that there are basically two different approaches to safety: the management approach and the scientific approach. Both these approaches are examined before the relationships between the scientific aims, existing methodologies and data are considered. The article concludes that despite all the methodological debates, the possibilities for a unified traffic science can follow only from a scientific approach.
