Abstract

In order to cope with chronic traffic congestion and an increasing number of car accidents, a new area-wide traffic control has been required to offer road users traffic information helpful for smooth traffic flow that conventional traffic control does not cover. The Metropolitan Police Department has developed a display terminal for area-wide traffic information to be installed in public facilities such as airports and parks so that road traffic information is available to drivers. This article describes the system architecture and the design and development of the traffic information terminal. Special attention is given to the high speed digital map display.
