Abstract

Calculations and measurements show that under normal conditions a driver may be subjected to luminance above the official limit of 1.4 lux at considerable distances from an approaching vehicle. This may be reduced below 0,2 lux by the proposed procedure. Starting at a suitable distance, or automatically at a predetermined luminance from an approaching vehicle, voltage on the driving beam filament is reduced steadily over 4 s, followed by extinction, while the passing beam is switched on at a predetermined time. Practical tests showed that visibility was improved in the "black hole".
