Abstract

This chapter focuses on visual information in the road environment. However, it is conceded that other sources of information from the external road environment (e.g., police car sirens, uneven road surfaces, odors) can also cause distraction. Likewise, although this chapter will focus purely on possible distractions from outside the vehicle, it should be noted that there is likely to be an interaction between visual information seen and attended to inside and outside the vehicle.
