Abstract

200 drivers have been interviewed in car parks in the South East of England to explore the factors that either keep them from dangerous driving and driving when drunk, or to discover what penalties might deter them and how these factors have been influenced by the extended retest regulations introduced in 1992. The results can be generalized to the national driving population. They show that non-offenders avoid breaking the law because it is dangerous. Self-confessed lawbreakers thought that they would be discouraged by the threat of disqualification. Very few drivers are aware of the provisions of the extended retest regulations.
