Abstract

In preparation for the 15 Asian Games to be held in December 2006, the State of Qatar is implementing an extremely aggressive program to upgrade its roadway infrastructure. Critical to this will be the construction of the Doha Expressway, which will be Qatar’s first urban freeway. Rather than constructing this freeway network on reserved and undeveloped corridors, it will instead be upgrades of existing primary arterials. Due to the short schedule, many of the upgrades will need to be constructed simultaneously. This will require creative solutions and the patience of the general public because arterials that normally would provide relief during construction, will simultaneously be under construction. Furthermore, maintaining traffic through the narrow urban corridor during the depressed interchange construction will be a challenge and require extremely ambitious construction staging.
