Abstract

While traffic crashes are often explained by human behaviour and error, the fact that the road traffic system is designed in a way that allows individuals to drive at excessive speeds remains an undeniable contributor to road crashes. Cars are of course a key component of the road traffic system, and virtually all cars on the roads are able to be driven at speeds that are well above the permitted limits. This fact sheet investigates how issues of speed and safety impinge upon the debate about downsizing vehicles. (Author/publisher)
