Abstract

This paper presents the first provisional results of a study made on behalf of the City Transport Company of Amsterdam to ascertain the ideal options for making "Amsterdam Nieuw Oost" accessible by public transport. By 2005, "Amsterdam Nieuw Oost", a potential new housing development in the eastern part of the city, will comprise approximately 15,000 houses. The ideal form of public transport in terms of operational efficiency is different for each stage of the building process. A theoretical assessment based on parameters applying to "Nieuw Oost" forms the basis for the development of a method of deciding on the best public transport system. It is concluded that - on the basis of the desired loop model - operation of express trams will become economically attractive by 2003.
