Abstract

Drive Smart is a free CD-ROM training product that can help you become a better, safer driver. Drive Smart accelerates your learning of skills, such as scanning and hazard perception, as you prepare to take your probationary licence test. The CD takes you through a range of interactive driving scenarios and quizzes, asking you to make judgements on safe driving practices and increasing your skills in the process. It's the perfect partner to the hands-on experience you get practising in a car. Three years of research conducted by the Monash University Accident Research Centre using state-of-the-art driving simulators has gone into the development of Drive Smart. Scientific studies have shown that completing the program will help you significantly to develop safer driving skills. You should have had at least some supervised driving practice before you start using Drive Smart. While about 40 hours of practice is ideal, any time is a good time to start using Drive Smart to support your 'real' driving practice. Some of the exercises in Drive Smart may seem repetitive, but research shows that to get the benefits from the program it is important to keep at it. Many of the techniques used in Drive Smart have been adapted from techniques used to train Air Force pilots. Drive Smart was developed as part of the TAC's ongoing commitment to reducing the number of young people killed or injured on our roads. (Author/publisher)
